In a significant geopolitical display, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in Beijing to participate in a military parade, marking his first appearance at a major multinational event during his 14-year rule. He joins Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a convergence that underscores a deepening alignment among the three nations.

A United Front Against the West

The gathering has been described by Western analysts as the “Axis of Upheaval,” a term reflecting the leaders’ shared intent to challenge the Western-led global order. This event builds on the momentum of a mutual defense pact signed between Russia and North Korea in June 2024, a development that could significantly alter the military calculus in the Asia-Pacific region.

During bilateral talks, President Putin praised the relationship between Russia and China, calling it “at an unprecedented level,” and noting that the two countries “were always together then and we remain together now.” This statement highlights their strong partnership, which has been under scrutiny since Russia’s 2022 military offensive in Ukraine.

Diplomatic and Strategic Implications

The military parade, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, is a show of force and unity. The presence of these three leaders, who have not previously been seen together at the same event, sends a clear message of a growing trilateral cooperation. While the gathering has not been officially confirmed as a trilateral meeting, it provides an opportunity for enhanced communication and strategic planning.

The event is also a platform for China to showcase its influence over nations facing Western isolation. It provides an opportunity for leaders like Kim to expand diplomatic footing and for Putin to finalize energy and trade agreements with China. The meeting also coincides with other high-level diplomatic engagements, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, which China promotes as an alternative to Western-dominated international forums.
