In the 12 months leading up to April 2024, a total of 149,200 immigrants arrived in the country, marking the third consecutive year with over 100,000 new arrivals.

The influx of immigrants has contributed to a notable increase in Ireland’s population, which now stands at approximately 5.38 million, the highest since 2008. This growth is largely driven by immigration from outside the European Union, particularly from Ukraine. The CSO reports that 86,800 of the new immigrants were from non-EU countries, with a significant portion being Ukrainian refugees.

Among the immigrants, 30,000 were returning Irish citizens, 27,000 were other EU citizens, and 5,400 were UK citizens. The remaining 86,800 were from other countries, including a significant number from Ukraine, reflecting the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis there.

In addition to the high levels of immigration, Ireland has also seen a rise in emigration. Over the same period, 69,900 people left the country, the highest emigration figure since 2015. This includes a substantial number of Irish citizens moving to Australia and the UK. Specifically, 10,600 people emigrated to Australia, up from 4,700 the previous year, and 15,200 moved to the UK, up from 14,600 in 2023.

Despite the increase in emigration, the net migration figure remains positive, with 79,300 more people arriving than leaving. This positive net migration, combined with a natural increase of 19,400 people (resulting from 54,200 births and 34,800 deaths), has led to the overall population growth.

The demographic changes have also highlighted shifts in the age structure of the population. The number of people aged 65 and over has increased, now representing 15.5% of the total population, up from 13.8% in 2018. This aging population presents both challenges and opportunities for Ireland’s social and economic systems.

The Irish government has acknowledged the challenges and opportunities presented by these demographic shifts. Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar previously emphasized the need to manage the flow of Ukrainian refugees into the country, and recent policy changes have included reductions in social welfare payments for Ukrainian refugees living in state-provided accommodation.

Bangladesh in Crisis: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Resigns Amid Violent Protests https://eirenow.news/politics-news/bangladesh-in-crisis-prime-minister-sheikh-hasina-resigns-amid-violent-protests/ https://eirenow.news/politics-news/bangladesh-in-crisis-prime-minister-sheikh-hasina-resigns-amid-violent-protests/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2024 10:23:19 +0000 https://eirenow.ie/?p=986 Bangladesh is facing a significant political upheaval as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amid escalating protests and violence. The unrest, which began over a month ago, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 300 people, including at least 98 fatalities in the most recent clashes.

The protests initially started as a movement against the government’s job quota system but quickly escalated into widespread anti-government demonstrations. Students, activists, and opposition parties have been at the forefront, demanding Hasina’s resignation and an end to her 15-year rule. The situation intensified over the weekend, with violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Dhaka and other major cities.

On Sunday, the violence reached a peak, with reports of at least 98 people killed in a single day. The government responded by imposing a nationwide curfew and shutting down internet services in an attempt to control the situation. Despite these measures, the protests continued to grow, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets.

In a dramatic turn of events, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister were evacuated from her official residence, Ganabhaban, to a safer location. Reports indicate that they were flown to India in a military helicopter. The army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, is expected to address the nation soon, with speculation that the military might take control to restore order.

The resignation of Sheikh Hasina marks the end of an era in Bangladeshi politics. She has been a dominant figure in the country’s political landscape, serving as Prime Minister since 2009. Her tenure has been marked by significant economic growth and development, but also by allegations of authoritarianism and human rights abuses.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. There are concerns about the potential for further violence and instability in the region. Human rights organizations have called for restraint and dialogue to resolve the crisis peacefully.

UK in Turmoil: Violent Protests Erupt After Tragic Murders and Misinformation Spread https://eirenow.news/national-news/uk-in-turmoil-violent-protests-erupt-after-tragic-murders-and-misinformation-spread/ https://eirenow.news/national-news/uk-in-turmoil-violent-protests-erupt-after-tragic-murders-and-misinformation-spread/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2024 06:57:22 +0000 https://eirenow.ie/?p=976 The UK has been gripped by a wave of violent protests and riots following the tragic murders of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party in Southport, Merseyside. The suspect, Axel Rudakubana, a 17-year-old born in Cardiff, Wales, has been at the center of a storm of misinformation, leading to widespread unrest.

The violence erupted in several towns and cities, including Liverpool, Hull, Bristol, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Blackpool, and Belfast. Far-right groups organized demonstrations that quickly descended into chaos, with missiles thrown, shops looted, and police officers attacked. In Liverpool, bricks, bottles, and flares were hurled at police, resulting in injuries to several officers.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the violence and pledged full support to the police to take action against extremists attempting to sow hate. He emphasized the distinction between the right to freedom of expression and violent disorder.

The unrest has been fueled by false information spreading online, suggesting that the suspect in the murders was a radical Muslim migrant. This misinformation has sparked anti-immigration protests, with demonstrators shouting Islamophobic slurs and clashing with counter-protesters advocating for unity and tolerance.

In Sunderland, anti-immigration demonstrators threw stones at police near a mosque, overturned vehicles, and set a car alight. The police have increased their presence in anticipation of further violence, and mosques have tightened security.

The situation has been described as the worst unrest in the UK in 13 years, reminiscent of the riots in 2011. The government and police are working to restore order and address the underlying issues that have led to this surge in violence.

The protests have not only caused physical damage but have also deepened social divides. Far-right groups, including the English Defence League and Patriotic Alternative, have been identified as key players in organizing these demonstrations. They have used social media to spread false claims about the suspect’s identity and background, further inflaming tensions.

In response to the escalating violence, the government has announced a national response linking police forces across the country through shared intelligence and the expanded use of facial recognition technology. This coordinated effort aims to prevent further outbreaks of violence and ensure the safety of all citizens.

The unrest poses a significant challenge to Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership, as he navigates the complex landscape of public order, misinformation, and social cohesion. The Prime Minister has called for unity and urged the public to reject the divisive rhetoric of extremist groups.

As the UK braces for more potential protests, the focus remains on restoring peace and addressing the root causes of the unrest. The tragic events in Southport have highlighted the urgent need for accurate information and responsible discourse in the face of crisis.

Joe Biden Withdraws from 2024 Presidential Election, Endorses Kamala Harris https://eirenow.news/politics-news/joe-biden-withdraws-from-2024-presidential-election-endorses-kamala-harris/ https://eirenow.news/politics-news/joe-biden-withdraws-from-2024-presidential-election-endorses-kamala-harris/#respond Mon, 22 Jul 2024 07:04:37 +0000 https://eirenow.ie/?p=750 In a historic and surprising turn of events, President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election. The decision comes after mounting pressure from within the Democratic Party and concerns about his electability in a highly competitive race.

In a heartfelt statement posted on his social media accounts, President Biden emphasized that his decision to step down was made in the best interest of the country. He stated, “It is in the best interest of our nation for me to stand down and allow new leadership to emerge. Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life, and I remain committed to supporting our party’s success in the upcoming election.”

The focus keyword, Joe Biden withdraws from 2024 presidential election, reflects the significant impact of this decision on the political landscape. As the sitting president, Biden’s withdrawal reshapes the dynamics of the Democratic Party’s strategy and opens the door for Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden has endorsed as his preferred candidate.

Kamala Harris Steps Up

Vice President Kamala Harris has received Biden’s full endorsement as the Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Harris, who has served as Biden’s vice president since 2021, expressed her gratitude for his support and pledged to continue the work they started together. “I am honored to have President Biden’s trust and support. Together, we have achieved much, and I am ready to lead our party and our nation forward,” Harris said in her response to Biden’s announcement.

Democratic Party’s Reaction

The Democratic Party is now faced with the task of rallying around a new candidate and preparing for a vigorous campaign against the Republican nominee. While there is widespread support for Harris within the party, some members have expressed concerns about the abrupt change in leadership just months before the election. However, many Democrats believe that Harris’s candidacy could energize the base and attract a broader coalition of voters.

Implications for the 2024 Election

Biden’s withdrawal from the race has significant implications for the 2024 election. It alters the political dynamics and forces both parties to reassess their strategies. The Republican candidate, expected to be former President Donald Trump, will now face Kamala Harris, a historic candidate who could become the first female president of the United States.

Political analysts suggest that Biden’s decision may also impact voter turnout and engagement. With a new candidate leading the ticket, the Democratic Party hopes to galvanize support and build momentum as the election approaches.

As it happened: Northern Ireland General Election 2024 Results https://eirenow.news/national-news/northern-ireland-general-election-2024-results/ https://eirenow.news/national-news/northern-ireland-general-election-2024-results/#respond Sat, 06 Jul 2024 17:20:34 +0000 https://eirenow.ie/?p=504 The 2024 general election in Northern Ireland has brought significant political shifts. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) experienced a major setback, losing several key seats. One of the most notable losses was Ian Paisley’s defeat in North Antrim to Jim Allister of the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV). This marked the end of a 54-year hold by the Paisley family on the constituency.

The DUP also lost seats in Lagan Valley and South Antrim. In Lagan Valley, the Alliance Party made history by winning the seat, previously a stronghold of the DUP. The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) also gained ground, with Robin Swann winning South Antrim from the DUP.

Sinn Féin emerged as the largest party in Northern Ireland, retaining all seven of its seats and increasing its vote share compared to the last general election in 2019. This victory solidifies Sinn Féin’s position as the dominant party at Westminster, Stormont, and local government levels. However, due to its policy of abstentionism, Sinn Féin will not take its seats in the House of Commons.

The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) maintained its two seats in Foyle and Belfast South and Mid Down. The party’s leader, Claire Hanna, retained her seat in Belfast South, continuing to be a significant voice for the party.

Nationally, the Labour Party achieved a landslide victory, with Sir Keir Starmer set to become the new Prime Minister. This result has been welcomed by many in Dublin, with Tánaiste Micheál Martin expressing hope for a reset in British-Irish relations after a tense period during the Brexit negotiations.

The election results have highlighted the changing political landscape in Northern Ireland. The DUP’s losses reflect a shift in voter sentiment, with many turning to other unionist parties like the TUV and UUP, as well as the cross-community Alliance Party. The success of Sinn Féin and the Alliance Party indicates a growing support for parties that advocate for a united Ireland and progressive policies.

The election night was dramatic, with counting taking place at three main centers: the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast, the Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt, and the South Lake Leisure Centre in Craigavon. The first results began to come through early in the morning, with final results confirming the significant changes in Northern Ireland’s political representation.

This significant promotion marks a milestone in his political career, catapulting him into one of the most crucial roles in the Irish government.

Jack Chambers, who previously served as a Junior Minister in the Department of Transport, has been recognized for his dedication and effective policymaking. His appointment comes at a time when Ireland is navigating complex economic challenges, including post-pandemic recovery and inflationary pressures.

In his new role, Chambers is expected to focus on sustainable economic growth, fiscal responsibility, and addressing housing affordability. His expertise and fresh perspective are anticipated to bring innovative solutions to the financial landscape of Ireland.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar expressed confidence in Chambers’ ability to lead the finance ministry, highlighting his commitment to public service and his understanding of economic intricacies. Chambers’ previous roles have prepared him well for this position, having dealt with significant issues in transportation and public safety.

As the youngest Finance Minister in recent history, Chambers’ appointment is also seen as a move towards involving younger generations in high-level decision-making processes. This decision aligns with the government’s broader strategy to rejuvenate its leadership and connect more effectively with younger constituents.

Chambers’ colleagues and political analysts believe his pragmatic approach and willingness to engage with diverse stakeholders will be beneficial in his new role. The new Finance Minister has already outlined his preliminary plans, emphasizing the importance of economic stability, investment in green technologies, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

With his appointment, the Irish government aims to foster a more resilient and inclusive economy. Chambers’ leadership will be pivotal in steering the country through its economic challenges and leveraging opportunities for growth and innovation.
