Dunnes Stores has issued an urgent recall of its Irish Chicken Smoky Barbecue Drumsticks due to potential salmonella contamination. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has alerted consumers to avoid eating the affected product and has emphasized the importance of checking for the implicated batch.

The recall applies to batch number 24 309, packaged in 500g with a best before date of November 14. Customers who have purchased this product are advised to check their freezers and return the affected items to any Dunnes Stores outlet for a full refund, even if they do not have a receipt.

Recall notices will be prominently displayed at point-of-sale locations. Retailers have been requested to withdraw the affected batch from their shelves and ensure recall notices are visible to customers.

The FSAI statement warns that while thorough cooking can eliminate salmonella, it is best to avoid consumption entirely for safety reasons. Salmonella infection typically presents symptoms such as diarrhoea, which may occasionally be severe and bloody, along with fever, headache, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms generally develop within 12 to 36 hours after exposure, though they can appear within 6 to 72 hours. In most cases, symptoms last between 4 to 7 days, but severe cases may require hospitalization, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants, and those with weakened immune systems.

For further information and support, customers can contact Dunnes Stores customer service or visit the FSAI website.
