In a significant diplomatic move, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, touched down in Delhi this Sunday. His arrival marks the beginning of a landmark two-day visit aimed at deepening the multifaceted partnership between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India. The visit occurs amidst rising tensions in West Asia, highlighting its strategic importance.

Upon his arrival, the Crown Prince was warmly received by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and was honored with a ceremonial welcome, underscoring the significance India places on his visit. This reception set the tone for what promises to be a series of fruitful discussions and agreements.

The Crown Prince’s visit was heralded on social media platforms with India’s External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, celebrating the occasion as “a new milestone in a historic relationship.” The presence of high-ranking UAE officials and a robust business delegation accompanying the prince underscores the visit’s pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations.

Sheikh Khaled’s agenda is packed, beginning with his engagements in Delhi followed by a visit to Mumbai, where he will attend a high-profile business forum. This forum, scheduled for Tuesday, will see leading business figures from both nations exploring opportunities for economic and commercial cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Crown Prince are set to hold talks on Monday, which are expected to further solidify the strong bonds between the two countries. These discussions follow the significant momentum gained during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the UAE in August 2015, which elevated the bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The robustness of the Indo-UAE relationship is evident in their economic engagements. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in February 2022, and the Local Currency Settlement (LCS) System established in July 2023, facilitate trade by enabling transactions in the respective national currencies. Bilateral trade reached a remarkable USD 85 billion in the 2022-23 period, reflecting the vibrant economic interactions that benefit both nations.

Furthermore, the UAE’s active participation in global forums under India’s invitation, such as the G20 and its recent entry into the SCO and BRICS with India’s support, highlights the dynamic international cooperation between the two countries. The defence sector, too, has seen invigorated engagements with the first bilateral army exercise, ‘Desert Cyclone’, taking place in Rajasthan in January 2024.

As the Crown Prince continues his visit, the focus will be on enhancing collaborations in newer areas such as technology, renewable energy, and more, promising a brighter future for both nations.
