Dublin: A centre housing approximately 20 International Protection (IP) applicants in Dublin’s South Inner City was the target of an attack last night. A small group, described as wearing hoods, assaulted the building in Dublin 8 by throwing objects at its windows and doors.
While no injuries were reported, several windows were broken, forcing the residents to move to the rear of the building for safety. Social media footage captured the assault, with shouts of “Get them out” clearly audible as the group targeted the facility.
GardaĆ Response and Damage: In a statement, the GardaĆ (Irish Police) confirmed their response to a public order incident: “GardaĆ responded to a public order incident where a number of wheelie bins were damaged by fire and windows were broken in the Dublin 8 area at approximately 7.05 pm last night.”
Political Condemnation and Calls for Action: Local Labour Councillor Darragh Moriarty strongly condemned the targeting of IPAS accommodation. He suggested that the attackers were emboldened by recent “disgraceful scenes” witnessed at the Citywest centre.
Councillor Moriarty stated: “It’s deeply disturbing to see the targeting of IPAS accommodation in recent nights. It’s clear agitators are emboldened by the disgraceful scenes in Citywest in recent days. This protest was planned and circulated on social media. Gardai need to do much more to proactively police these smaller sites and protect inhabitants.” His comments underline growing concern over organized agitation against facilities housing asylum seekers.
