DUBLIN – Gardaí have confirmed the arrest and subsequent release of a juvenile in connection with an arson attack that caused criminal damage to a playground slide structure in Sandymount, south Dublin, earlier this month.
The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, 7 September, at Sean Moore Park playground. Dublin Fire Brigade crews from Tara Street attended the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze, with no injuries reported. The fire caused significant damage to the popular children’s play area, which has drawn widespread community condemnation.
Arrest and Diversion Process
Following an investigation, a male juvenile was arrested by Gardaí in connection with the incident, which is being officially treated as criminal damage by fire.
The boy has since been released without charge pending a referral to the Garda National Youth Diversion Bureau (GNYDB). This procedure is standard practice under the Children Act 2001 for young people who come to the attention of An Garda Síochána for alleged criminal behaviour.
The GNYDB, which oversees the Youth Diversion Programme, aims to prevent young people from entering the formal criminal justice system. The Director of the Diversion Programme will now assess the case, a decision-making process that takes into account the nature of the offence, the impact on the community, and the views of the victim (Dublin City Council/the community).
Should the boy be accepted into the programme, he would typically be dealt with by means of a caution and a period of supervision administered by a Juvenile Liaison Officer (JLO). The diversion process often involves the young person accepting responsibility for their actions and agreeing to an action plan, which may include restorative practices like mediation or making amends for the damage caused.
Local representatives have condemned the act of vandalism, noting that this is not the first instance of anti-social behaviour targeting the playground, and have called for increased Garda patrols and security measures, such as CCTV, to deter future incidents. Investigations are ongoing.
