CORK, IRELAND — A 25-year-old Cork man has been formally charged with the murder of his mother, Stella Gallagher, and assault causing harm to his father, Brian Gallagher, following a fatal stabbing incident earlier this week.
The accused, David Gallagher, of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, Cork, appeared before the District Court in Cork this afternoon.
Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes gave evidence of arresting and charging Mr. Gallagher. When the charges—murder of his 59-year-old mother and assault causing harm to his 62-year-old father—were put to him, the accused made no reply.
The charges relate to the attack at the family home on Monday night, where Stella Gallagher sustained fatal stab injuries while attempting to escape the home and was later pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital. Her husband, Brian Gallagher, remains seriously injured.
Defence Solicitor Shane Collins-Daly consented to a remand in custody. Judge John King remanded David Gallagher in custody and specifically recommended that he receive an urgent psychiatric evaluation in prison.
The court appearance follows a day of intense Garda activity, which included a technical and forensic examination of the Gallaghers’ home, door-to-door enquiries, and a search of a local green area.
David Gallagher is scheduled to appear before the court again next Thursday.
