CORK, IRELAND — A 25-year-old man remains in garda custody in Cork city, facing questioning in connection with the fatal stabbing of 59-year-old Stella Gallagher earlier this week.
The violent incident unfolded late on Monday night at Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough. Ms Gallagher, who sustained multiple stab wounds, was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) but was tragically pronounced dead before midnight, despite extensive efforts by paramedics at the scene.
Her husband, 62-year-old Brian Gallagher, was also seriously injured during the attack. He underwent emergency surgery at CUH and is currently reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
Gardaí and emergency services were dispatched to the residential area, located about 3km from the city centre, just after 9 p.m. on Monday. The alarm was raised by concerned neighbours who witnessed the couple fleeing their home and being pursued and stabbed by a man on the street.
The suspect, aged 25, was arrested at the scene immediately following the attack. He is currently detained at a garda station in Cork city as a formal murder investigation is actively under way.
