A serving member of An Garda Síochána (the Irish police force) has been arrested as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the disappearance of approximately €100,000 worth of seized cannabis from an evidence locker.
The Garda officer is among six people arrested by the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) in connection with the missing drugs. The arrests follow a series of searches conducted in the Leinster area yesterday.
- The Incident: The cannabis, with an estimated street value of €100,000, was seized in the Eastern Region in late 2023 and placed in an evidence locker. The drugs were discovered missing in early 2024, prompting a high-level criminal investigation.
- The Arrests: The serving Garda was detained under organized crime legislation. Five other individuals—four men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and a woman in her 40s—were also detained for questioning.
- Implications: The involvement of a serving officer in the disappearance of seized evidence raises serious concerns about internal integrity and potential links to organized crime. The investigation is being handled by the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit, underscoring the seriousness of the breach of trust within the police service.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have emphasized their commitment to a transparent and thorough review of internal procedures.
