Dublin, August 18, 2025 – The Garda Ombudsman, Fiosrú, has launched an independent investigation after a man sustained serious injuries during an interaction with a garda in Dublin city centre last week.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 15, near the Holiday Inn on O’Connell Street. The 51-year-old man was reported to have suffered “serious harm”, prompting an automatic referral under new policing legislation.

One of Fiosrú’s on-call investigators attended the scene on Friday, and the office has since confirmed that it is in ongoing contact with the injured man’s family

Fiosrú is appealing for witnesses who may have been in the O’Connell Street area at the time. Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from anyone near the hotel around 4.15am, as well as from taxi drivers or motorists who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage.

“Anyone with information which may be of assistance to this independent investigation is asked to contact Fiosrú at 0818 600 800 or ei.ursoifobfsctd-3acb6a@ofni,” the Ombudsman’s office said in a statement.

Fiosrú has confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, and no further details are being released at this stage.
