DUBLIN : An Garda Síochána has announced a significant expansion of the national safety camera network to combat rising road fatalities. Starting January 1, 2026, a total of 390 new safety camera zones will become operational across the country, bringing the total number of enforcement zones to 1,901.
Tragic Statistics: A Decade High
The move comes as Ireland records its highest number of road deaths in over ten years. As of December 23, 2025, 186 people have tragically lost their lives on Irish roads. This surge in fatalities has prompted authorities to take a proactive approach by targeting high-risk areas known as “speed enforcement zones.”
County-Wise Distribution
The new cameras will be strategically placed in areas with a history of speed-related collisions:
- Dublin: 36 new zones
- Cork: 30 new zones
- Donegal: 26 new zones
- Tipperary: 23 new zones
- Wexford: 21 new zones
- Community Requests: Notably, 55 of the new zones were requested directly by local communities concerned about local road safety.
