A 51-year-old man who was seriously injured during an incident in Dublin last week has died. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 15 on O’Connell Street, is now the subject of an independent investigation by Fiosrú, the Office of the Gardai Ombudsman.
The incident took place following an interaction involving gardaí (Irish police) near the Holiday Inn. As a result of the man’s death, Fiosrú has launched a criminal investigation. A dedicated officer has been assigned to the case, and the organization’s on-call team of investigators attended the scene.
Fiosrú has confirmed that they are in contact with the man’s family and have been liaising with the Dublin City Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist to arrange a post-mortem examination. The incident was referred to Fiosrú by An Garda Síochána, as is legally required in cases of death or serious harm following an interaction with a Garda member.
Fiosrú is appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are asking anyone who was in the vicinity of the Holiday Inn on O’Connell Street at approximately 4:15 AM on Friday, August 15, to contact them. They are particularly interested in hearing from passing vehicles, including taxis, that may have dashcam footage or anyone who may have recorded the incident on a mobile device.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Fiosrú at 0818 600 800 or by emailing ei.ursoif. @ofni
