DUBLIN: Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, has upgraded its weather alert to a Status Orange Rain Warning for Counties Cork and Waterford, ahead of what forecasters are describing as a “rain and thunder blitz” tonight and into Sunday morning.
The Orange Warning, which signifies infrequent and dangerous weather conditions that may pose a threat to life and property, is in effect for both counties from 8:00 PM Saturday until 5:00 AM Sunday.
Key Impacts of the Orange Warning:
- Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms: Expect persistent, heavy rainfall with the possibility of intense thundery downpours.
- Flooding Risk: There is a significant risk of river flooding, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas, along with widespread localised surface flooding.
- Driving Conditions: The intense weather is expected to create very difficult traveling conditions, urging motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys during the warning period.
A preceding Status Yellow Rain Warning is already in place for Cork, Kerry, and Waterford from 5:00 PM Saturday, highlighting the growing intensity of the weather event. Met Éireann and local authorities are advising the public to exercise extreme caution and be prepared for potential disruption.
