DROGHEDA, CO. LOUTH – Gardaí have renewed their appeal for public assistance in the disappearance of schoolboy Kyran Durnin, almost a year to the day he was first reported missing. The case, which has seen an extensive and complex investigation, continues to mystify authorities who believe the boy, who would now be nine, is missing and presumed dead.
Kyran was last seen in June 2022 when he was six years old, with the last known photographs of him taken at that time. He was officially reported missing from his home in Drogheda in August of the following year. A murder investigation was formally launched in October 2024 after gardaí received specific information suggesting he was no longer alive.
To date, the investigation has involved more than 570 separate investigative actions. Authorities have seized and reviewed nearly 30,000 hours of CCTV footage and conducted searches on three properties, including intrusive excavations.
The inquiry has led to two arrests on suspicion of murder. A woman in her 20s, who was known to Kyran, was arrested and subsequently released without charge. A 36-year-old man, named locally as Anthony Maguire, was also arrested following an intrusive search at a property and its adjoining gardens. He was also released without charge.
A new and tragic development emerged when Anthony Maguire was found dead at his home in Drogheda just days after his release. Gardaí are treating the matter as a “personal tragedy” and are not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.
The whereabouts of Kyran and the circumstances of his death remain unknown. Gardaí are urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. The public can contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
