LETTERKENNY, CO. DONEGAL — The North West Indian community is set to celebrate Durga Puja with a two-day festival this weekend. The “North West Durgotsav 2025” will be held at Cill an Oir, Killyclug, Letterkenny, and is a key event for the Bengali and wider Indian diaspora in the region. The celebrations, which are open to all, will take place on Saturday, 27th September and Sunday, 28th September, featuring a range of traditional rituals and cultural performances.

Durga Puja is a major Hindu festival celebrating the goddess Durga and her victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and is a homecoming for the goddess, who is believed to visit her earthly home with her children.
The two-day schedule is packed with significant rituals and festivities. On Saturday, 27th September, the event will begin with Maha Saptami and Maha Ashtami prayers. Devotees will participate in Pushpanjali
(flower offerings) and Bhog Prasad
distribution. The evening will conclude with a cultural program.
Sunday, 28th September, will mark the final day of the festival, including Maha Nabami and Bijaya Dasami. The morning will see Maha Nabami Puja, followed by the vibrant and joyous Dasami Boron
and Sindur Khela
. Sindur Khela
, or the “vermillion game,” is a special ritual where married women apply sindur
on each other, symbolizing good fortune. The celebrations will culminate with a lively Dhunuchi
Dance, a traditional devotional dance performed with earthen incense burners, followed by the farewell rituals of Bijaya Dasami.
The event is a joint effort by the local community and is supported by several local businesses, including Letterkenny Medics, Gomart, Letterkenny Spice Land, Kumon, Gupta’s Sweets & Snacks, and Peppermint Takeaway.
Organizers have extended a warm welcome to all devotees and well-wishers. Entry to the event is free, and Prasad
will be provided.
