A Sligo man has issued a stark plea for urgent safety improvements on a notorious stretch of the N17, describing it as a “death trap” following decades of fatal crashes.
The call focuses on the section between Ballinacarrow and Curry on the main Sligo–Galway route, where an estimated 27 people have lost their lives over recent decades.
Reduced Speed Limit Highlights Danger
The road’s danger has already prompted authorities to lower the speed limit to 80 km/h, despite it being part of a national primary route. Campaigners argue that the downgrade underscores the urgent need for structural upgrades rather than piecemeal measures.
Community Fear and Frustration
Local residents say the high number of fatalities and serious collisions has created fear for regular commuters and visitors alike. “How many more people have to die before this is fixed?” the Sligo man asked, urging the Government and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to prioritise the project.
Longstanding Safety Concerns
Calls for the N17 upgrade are not new. For years, campaigners have highlighted issues such as narrow carriageways, poor overtaking opportunities, and limited visibility on bends. Many point to other national routes that have been modernised while the N17 remains largely unchanged.
Next Steps
While TII has previously committed to reviewing safety along the Sligo–Galway corridor, no concrete timeline for works on this particular section has been confirmed. Campaigners say that without urgent action, the number of fatalities could rise further.
