SLIGO – County Sligo is set to receive a significant boost to its enterprise and innovation sector with the announcement of €1,198,016 in funding under the Smart Regions Enterprise Innovation Scheme. The investment, welcomed by Ministers Frank Feighan and Marian Harkin, is designated for two key projects focused on advanced technology and manufacturing.

AI Studio and Accelerator Programme Funded

The largest portion of the funding, €998,016, has been allocated to the AIM Centre at Market Yard, Sligo. This investment will support the development of an AI Studio and the launch of an AI Accelerator Programme. This programme is specifically designed to assist local businesses in scoping the potential of Artificial Intelligence and integrating AI into their operations, thereby driving digital transformation.

Focus on Industrial Development

The remaining €200,000 will be dedicated to a feasibility study for the development of a Fire Testing Centre and a Heavy Industrial Innovation Hub for wet manufacturing, also to be located in Sligo. This dual focus highlights a commitment to both high-tech and traditional industrial sectors.

Ministerial Support and Regional Development

Fine Gael Minister of State, Frank Feighan, and Minister of State Marian Harkin strongly welcomed the announcement by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke.

“The Smart Regions programme is great news for our area. It will help create new opportunities, support local jobs and encourage innovation in sectors that matter to us,” said Minister Feighan, stressing that the investment underscores the Government’s principle of balanced regional development.

Minister Harkin added that the initiative is “building the foundations for a more innovative, sustainable and competitive regional economy.” Councillor Thomas Walsh echoed this sentiment, stating that the investment shows the government is “putting our money where our mouth is when it comes to supporting local enterprise, supporting entrepreneurs and facilitating very high levels of innovation and excellence right here in Sligo.”
