Dublin- A Government motion of confidence in Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Simon Harris is set to be debated and voted on in the Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) this afternoon. This strategic move by the coalition government pre-empts a planned no-confidence motion that was due to be tabled next week by the opposition party Aontú.
The motion is a direct response to sustained criticism of Mr. Harris’s record on children’s healthcare, specifically concerning surgical waiting lists during his tenure as Minister for Health. Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has been vocal in his condemnation, arguing that the Tánaiste “failed significantly to deliver on the promise” that no child would wait longer than four months for a vital procedure, such as a scoliosis operation.
The debate is expected to highlight what Mr. Tóibín termed a “crisis” within Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) and will inevitably focus on the tragic death of nine-year-old Harvey Morrison in July. Harvey, who suffered from spina bifida and scoliosis, experienced numerous and lengthy delays in accessing urgent scoliosis surgery throughout his life. 1 Mr. Harris and Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill recently met with Harvey’s parents to discuss the matter.
