Dublin — The High Court has confirmed the sanction of erasure from the register of teachers for a post-primary school teacher who engaged in a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old Leaving Certificate student shortly before her examinations.

The teacher’s misconduct included sharing explicit photos with the student via Snapchat.

Last month, the teacher was found guilty of professional misconduct charges concerning his inappropriate relationships with two female Leaving Cert students several years ago at the school where he taught.

Mr. Justice Michael P O’Higgins, in confirming the sanction imposed by The Teaching Council, described the case as involving “extremely serious findings of misconduct” by the teacher.

Justice O’Higgins stated that the most severe sanction—erasure from the register—was “inevitable.” In addition to being struck off, the teacher is prohibited from applying to have his name restored to the register for a period of thirty years.

Due to a court order, the identity of the teacher, the young women involved, and the school cannot be revealed.
