DUBLIN – The tragic death of 17-year-old Vadym Davydenko, a Ukrainian national seeking international protection, has shocked the country. The teenager was fatally stabbed at a Tusla-managed emergency residential unit in Donaghmede, North Dublin, just days after arriving in Ireland.
Gardaí have launched a murder investigation and have arrested a male juvenile in connection with the incident.

Vadym Davydenko, who arrived in Ireland just last Sunday, died following a violent incident at the apartment complex in the Grattan Wood area on Wednesday morning.
- Victim’s Injuries: Vadym was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts by paramedics to save him. Reports indicate he suffered multiple stab wounds. He was reportedly hoping to study IT and cybersecurity in Ireland.

- Other Casualties: A second male teenager, also a foreign national, and a female adult staff member were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the altercation.
Arrest and Investigation
Gardaí confirmed on Friday that a male juvenile, who had initially been hospitalised for injuries sustained during the incident, was arrested on suspicion of murder following his release from medical care. He is currently detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
An Garda Síochána has established an incident room and confirmed they are following a definite line of inquiry, stating they are not looking for any other person in relation to the fatal stabbing.
Repatriation and Community Support
The death has prompted an outpouring of grief and led to immediate efforts to support the victim’s family.
- Repatriation Efforts: The Embassy of Ukraine in Ireland confirmed it is in close contact with the deceased’s family and is assisting with the arrangements for the repatriation of Vadym’s body back to Ukraine.
- Fundraising: Family friends have set up an online fundraiser, stating that the costs for transporting the body home are high (reportedly around €8,000), and the parents are struggling to meet the expense.
- Tusla Response: Tusla confirmed it is fully cooperating with the Garda investigation and that its immediate priority is the safety and wellbeing of the other young people and staff who were at the unit, with additional supports being provided to all affected. The incident has also renewed scrutiny on the use and oversight of privately run emergency accommodation for vulnerable young people in State care. Vadym was reportedly due to celebrate his 18th birthday next month.
