WATERFORD, IRELAND — Irish Rail has announced that rail services in and out of Waterford will face significant disruptions on weekday mornings for a period of six months. The changes are necessary to allow for crucial flood prevention works aimed at protecting the line from repeated flooding.
The extensive works, which are part of the wider Waterford North Quays development, are designed to make the rail line resilient to the effects of climate change. The project also includes replacing the existing mechanical signaling system with a new electrical one, a key upgrade for the route.
The disruptions will primarily affect some off-peak services from Mondays to Thursdays, between 8 am and 2:30 pm. The work will be carried out in two phases:
- Phase 1: Beginning next Monday, August 25, and running until November 27.
- Phase 2: Resuming after the Christmas period on January 5 and concluding on March 26.
Service Changes: During these periods, several services will be altered, with bus transfers in place to facilitate passenger travel:
- Dublin Heuston to Waterford: The 7:20 am and 10:15 am services will terminate at Kilkenny. Passengers will transfer to buses for the onward journey to Thomastown and Waterford.
- Waterford to Dublin Heuston: The 11 am and 1:05 pm services will begin with bus transfers from Waterford and Thomastown to Kilkenny, where passengers will board a train to Dublin Heuston.
- Limerick Junction to Waterford: The 9:45 pm service will terminate at Carrick-on-Suir, with a bus transfer for the final leg to Waterford.
