NEW YORK – A powerful winter storm, named Winter Storm Devin, has slammed the United States Northeast, bringing a dangerous mix of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The storm has caused massive disruptions to post-Christmas travel, leading to thousands of flight cancellations and emergency declarations in several states.
Key Highlights:
- Travel Chaos: As of Saturday, December 27, 2025, more than 1,800 flights have been cancelled and over 22,000 delayed across the US. Major hubs like JFK, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia are the most affected.
- States of Emergency: New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Acting Governor Tahesha Way have declared States of Emergency. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel due to “treacherous” road conditions.
- Weather Warnings: The National Weather Service has issued warnings for up to 30cm (12 inches) of snow in localized areas of the Hudson Valley and Long Island. Snowfall rates in New York City have hit nearly 5cm per hour.

Authorities warn that while the heaviest snow may conclude by Saturday evening, icy conditions and high winds will continue to make travel hazardous throughout the weekend.
