A Cork city community is in shock after a woman in her 60s died and her husband, also in his 60s, was left seriously injured following a stabbing incident outside their home last night.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene at Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough at approximately 9:00 PM. Both the woman and her husband were found seriously injured on the street, having sustained multiple stab wounds.

The woman was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where, despite the efforts of medical staff, she was pronounced dead before midnight. Her husband remains in CUH in a serious but stable condition.

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the incident. He is understood to be known to the couple. The suspect is currently being detained at a Garda station in Cork city under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, where he can be held for up to 24 hours.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed, and an incident room has been established at Anglesea Garda Station.

Garda Appeal: Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, especially those who were in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM last night and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to come forward.
