Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for Munster counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick, with risks of lightning damage, power outages and localised flooding.

The weather warning will come into effect from 9am on Monday (18 August) and remain in place until 6pm. Forecasters caution that conditions could lead to dangerous travelling conditions, particularly in areas prone to flash flooding.

What to Expect on Monday

According to Met Éireann, while Sunday night will remain largely dry and clear, with temperatures between 12°C and 17°C, cloud cover will build quickly over Munster, south Leinster and south Connacht during Monday morning. This will give way to showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be heavy.

The northern half of the country is expected to remain largely dry throughout the day. Temperatures on Monday will range from 19°C to 25°C, with the warmest conditions expected in the midlands and west.

Potential impacts of the thunderstorm warning include:

  • Lightning strikes causing damage to infrastructure
  • Power outages in affected areas
  • Localised flooding due to heavy downpours
  • Hazardous driving conditions on regional and national routes

Monday Night: Further Showers and Humid Conditions

As the warning period lapses on Monday evening, showers will continue—particularly across the southwestern half of the country. Some will be heavy. Despite the unsettled conditions, overnight temperatures will remain mild and humid, not falling below 11°C to 17°C, with light east to northeast breezes.

Tuesday: Sunshine and Scattered Showers

Tuesday is expected to bring a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, mainly concentrated in the southwest. Showers will become more isolated by evening, with Ulster experiencing the best of the dry weather.

  • Daytime highs: 18–19°C in the east, 23–24°C in the west.
  • Tuesday night: Mostly dry with clear skies and just a few isolated showers. Temperatures will range between 11°C and 15°C.

Midweek Outlook: Drier Conditions Ahead

By midweek, conditions are forecast to settle, with Wednesday and Thursday bringing mainly dry weather nationwide. A mix of cloud and sunny spells is expected, with only the occasional stray shower. Temperatures will remain above seasonal averages, ranging from 17°C to 22°C in light to moderate easterly or southeasterly breezes.

This shift will bring some relief after an unsettled start to the week, offering opportunities for outdoor activities across much of the country.

Staying Safe During Thunderstorm Warnings

Met Éireann is advising residents in affected counties to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during peak thunderstorm activity.
  • Stay indoors where possible and keep devices charged in case of power disruptions.
  • Be alert for localised flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.
  • Monitor official updates for any changes to the warning status.
