A 20-year-old man has been disqualified from driving for four years and fined €450 after being caught operating a vehicle without insurance or a license in Enniscrone.
The court heard that Gardaí stopped Sean Farrell, with an address at Carrowcarden, Enniscrone, on July 22, 2025. Sergeant Derek Butler testified that officers observed the vehicle on Main Street and performed a routine check, which revealed the car was uninsured.
Upon being stopped, Farrell cooperated fully with authorities and admitted he held neither insurance nor a valid driving license. An Garda Síochána (the Irish police force) subsequently seized the vehicle at the scene.
Legal Proceedings and Prior Convictions
During the hearing at Sligo District Court, it emerged that this was not the defendant’s first encounter with road traffic legislation. The court was informed that Farrell had two previous convictions handed down by Ballina District Court in November of last year.
Defending solicitor Mr. Tom MacSharry described the case as a “very difficult situation” for his client. He noted that:
- The defendant is a young man who now understands the gravity of his actions.
- The significant disqualification serves as a harsh but necessary lesson.
- The client cooperated immediately during the initial roadside stop.
Sentencing
Presiding Judge Éiteáin Cunningham issued the following penalties:
- Driving Without Insurance: A conviction, a €250 fine, and a four-year disqualification from driving.
- Driving Without a License: A conviction and an additional €200 fine.
What’s Next: The four-year ban takes effect immediately, prohibiting the defendant from operating any mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place. Failure to adhere to the disqualification order could result in further criminal charges and potential imprisonment.
