A Garda officer has been injured following a violent confrontation during a burglary response in Dublin 15. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, prompting an immediate law enforcement operation.
According to a Garda spokesperson, officers from Blanchardstown Garda Station responded to a reported break-in at a business premises in the Blanchardstown area at approximately 3.45am. Upon arrival, it was evident that a burglary had taken place. Gardaí on the scene requested additional support as they commenced a search of the premises.
During the search, officers encountered a man armed with a bladed weapon who became aggressive and threatening. A Garda in his 20s sustained a stab wound to his hand during the altercation.
He was quickly transported to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown for medical treatment. His injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening. The officer has since been discharged, and Garda welfare services have been made available to support him.
The suspect, a man in his 30s originally from Cork, was arrested at the scene. He is currently being detained at a Dublin Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. A weapon believed to have been used in the assault was seized, along with €1,500 in cash.
An Garda Síochána confirmed that a full investigation is underway and evidence is being collected from the crime scene as part of ongoing inquiries.
Detective Garda Mark Ferris, Dublin West representative for the Garda Representative Association (GRA), commended the officers involved for their bravery and professionalism under extreme circumstances.
“It is with real concern that we acknowledge yet another incident in which a young Garda was assaulted while carrying out their duties, this time during the arrest of an individual in possession of a knife in Blanchardstown,” said Ferris.
He added: “Attacks on members of An Garda Síochána are entirely unacceptable, and sadly, becoming far too common. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks our members face daily while carrying out their work.”
This latest assault comes amid a wider conversation about the increasing dangers faced by frontline Gardaí across Ireland. Incidents of violence against officers have prompted calls from within the force and political circles for enhanced protections and resources for law enforcement personnel.
