SLIGO, IRELAND – Gardaí in Sligo have issued a firm warning to the public regarding the dangers of misinformation and fake news circulating on social media, following a recent incident that led to widespread concern in the local community.

The warning was prompted by a mistaken alert issued by a local school last week, which led to false claims being shared across social platforms. The initial message, sent to parents, raised safety concerns that were later clarified by the school as a misunderstanding. Officials confirmed that there was no threat to public safety and no actual incident had occurred.

In a statement issued by An Garda Síochána, officers stressed that no reports of child abduction or similar suspicious activity had been received in the Sligo area. Gardaí further emphasised that unverified posts, especially those implying threats to children, can generate unnecessary fear and escalate tensions within peaceful communities.

“An Garda Síochána is aware of online posts and commentary containing suggestions of an inappropriate approach or approaches to children in Co. Sligo. No such incident has been reported, and no evidence exists to support these claims,” the statement read.

The force reiterated the growing impact of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, particularly when such content is amplified by multiple online accounts. This amplification, Gardaí noted, often fuels harmful narratives and can lead to stigmatisation of minority groups and individuals seeking International Protection in Ireland.

An Garda Síochána cautioned that:

“Misinformation, disinformation and fake news, as occurred in this case, is typically amplified in order to spread fear and concern in peaceful communities with incorrect and dangerous misconceptions.”

The police appealed to the public to exercise caution and responsibility when consuming and sharing online content. Specifically, they urged individuals to independently verify information before sharing it on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and other messaging apps.

This call comes amid a broader campaign by Gardaí to combat the spread of fake news, which has been on the rise in recent years. Authorities have frequently highlighted how unsubstantiated social media claims can strain community relations, especially when they involve sensitive topics such as public safety and ethnic diversity.

The statement continued:

“An Garda Síochána is strongly committed to engaging proactively and respectfully with all members of society, and in particular, persons from minority groups and diverse backgrounds.”

In addition to promoting digital literacy and responsible social media use, Gardaí reminded the public to contact emergency services via 999 or 112 in situations involving crimes in progress or when urgent assistance is required.

The incident in Sligo is not an isolated case. Across Ireland and the broader European context, authorities have seen an uptick in misleading content spreading through online communities, often originating from misunderstandings or deliberate attempts to provoke unrest.

The Government of Ireland, along with An Garda Síochána and educational institutions, have taken steps in recent years to introduce awareness campaigns about online safety and to educate the public on how to identify false or misleading information. These efforts are especially critical at a time when international tensions and domestic pressures have made many communities more susceptible to fear-based narratives.

The Sligo school involved in the original incident has since updated parents and guardians with accurate information and encouraged them to rely on official channels for updates regarding student safety.

The Gardaí’s latest statement serves as a strong reminder to all Irish citizens to prioritise truth, accuracy, and community harmony over fear-driven speculation. In an increasingly digital age, the responsibility to safeguard truth lies with everyone—from government institutions to social media users.
