Sligo University Hospital is appealing to the public to adhere to its current visiting restrictions due to an outbreak of Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, and COVID-19. The hospital is currently managing Norovirus cases across four wards and a COVID-19 outbreak affecting one ward.
Visiting the impacted wards will only be allowed on compassionate grounds in exceptional cases. Those seeking to visit under these circumstances must contact the relevant ward manager in advance to make arrangements.
Hospital staff are enforcing these restrictions to protect patients, visitors, and healthcare workers. Visitors are required to cooperate with staff and use the alcohol-based hand gels provided upon entering and leaving the hospital. Infection control protocols will remain in place on the affected wards until further notice.
The HSE has also issued a public advisory requesting that individuals experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, sore throat, cough, fever, or shortness of breath refrain from visiting the hospital to prevent the spread of infection.
Guidelines for Visitors to Reduce Infection Risk:
- If you have symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting, avoid visiting until you have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours.
- Wash your hands with soap and water after using the toilet or if your hands are visibly dirty.
- Use only the designated visitor toilets on the ground floor and avoid using patient toilets in the wards.
These measures are essential in preventing the spread of illness and ensuring the safety of all patients, staff, and visitors. The hospital thanks the public for their cooperation during this time.
