Starting today, the speed limit on rural and local roads across Ireland will be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h as part of the Government’s road safety strategy. The affected roads include those designated with an “L” followed by a number or those without a numerical designation.
The decision to lower speed limits is aimed at reducing road fatalities and enhancing safety for all road users, particularly in areas where high speeds pose a greater risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. The measure is part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at improving road conditions and minimizing accidents.
To facilitate the transition, local authorities have received grant funding from the Department of Transport to install new signage and poles that clearly indicate the updated speed limits. The Government emphasizes that this change is a crucial step in making Ireland’s roads safer and encourages all drivers to adhere to the new regulations.
