In a significant move to combat a persistent backlog of appointments, the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) has dramatically expanded operating hours at several test centres across Ireland, with some key locations now offering 24-hour service. This initiative aims to drastically cut down waiting times for motorists needing their mandatory roadworthiness tests.
Certain NCTS centres have extended their weekday hours, now operating from 7 AM to 10:30 PM, while others are open from 8 AM to 5:30 PM. To further boost capacity and flexibility for vehicle owners, weekend testing has also been introduced at some centres. Notably, high-demand areas like Little Island in Co. Cork, and a shared service between Northpoint and Deansgrange in Dublin, have commenced round-the-clock testing.
The extended hours are a direct response to record demand for NCTs, a situation exacerbated by a pre-existing backlog from the COVID-19 pandemic and a growing population. The Department of Transport acknowledges that the average waiting period for an NCT is currently under 23 days, though this can vary, with shorter waits generally observed outside Dublin and Cork.
NCTS is also actively addressing staffing challenges. Over 70 new inspectors, predominantly from the Philippines, have been recruited, and existing staff are being offered overtime and additional shifts. These measures, combined with the extended operating hours and the potential addition of 100 more testers from outside the European Economic Area, are anticipated to significantly reduce the backlog in the coming months.
Despite the service improvements, the move to extended hours has not been met with universal approval. Paul Murphy, People Before Profit/Solidarity TD, has voiced strong objections to the 24-hour operation of NCT centres. He raises concerns about the potential impact on nearby residents, particularly regarding noise disturbance. Murphy highlights that early morning operating times, such as 7:30 AM, could disrupt residents still asleep, especially at centres located in densely populated areas or close to residential housing.
Motorists are advised to check the NCTS website for the specific opening and closing times of their nearest test centre. It’s important to note that centres may close briefly for shift changes or breaks. For those requiring an earlier appointment than what’s available online, the priority list system can be utilized, with NCTS aiming to provide an appointment within 28 days.
NCTS has also highlighted an ongoing issue with “no-shows” and late cancellations, urging customers to inform them as soon as possible if they cannot make their appointment. This allows other motorists to be offered the slot.
