In a grim update from the waters off Sicily, the superyacht disaster that shocked the Sligo community has taken a more tragic turn. Divers searching the sunken Bayesian superyacht have recovered the bodies of five individuals. The identities of the deceased have not been confirmed as authorities continue their meticulous investigation. This devastating news comes as search efforts intensify for one remaining missing person.

Among those affected by the disaster is 29-year-old Sasha Murray from Maugherow, Co Sligo, who survived the ordeal with a leg injury. She was part of a group that included high-profile individuals like British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who is still missing. Lynch was notable for his recent acquittal in a major US fraud case.

The catastrophe unfolded when a tornado capsized the luxury yacht on Monday, leading to a desperate and immediate rescue operation. Although 15 passengers were rescued, the community remained hopeful for those unaccounted for. Now, with the discovery of five bodies, the situation has escalated to a recovery mission.

Fr Tom Hever, a local parish priest in Maugherow, shared his thoughts with Ocean FM, noting the community’s deep connection to the Murray family and their collective shock and relief at Sasha’s survival. “The news of the bodies found has been a heavy blow to all of us here. Our prayers continue not only for Sasha’s recovery but also for the families of those still missing,” he remarked.

The search and rescue teams are working against challenging conditions, hindered by debris and structural blockages within the yacht, which might have trapped passengers during the initial sinking.

As this tragic event continues to unfold, the community of Sligo and families around the world wait anxiously for any further updates.
