The deceased, identified as Edward William Johnston, a 50-year-old resident of Malta, was involved in a tense confrontation with police officers after being implicated in the murder of Nicolette Ghirxi, his former partner. Ms. Ghirxi was found dead in an apartment complex in Birkirkara, a village located about 6 kilometers from St Julian’s.

Police arrived at the scene of the murder around 2 a.m. and began their investigation. Mr. Johnston was not present at the apartment complex when authorities arrived but was later located in the St Julian’s area, where the tragic stand-off unfolded.

Stand-Off with Police Ends in Tragedy

During the stand-off, Mr. Johnston, who was reportedly armed with what turned out to be a replica gun, threatened staff at a nearby hotel. Officers from Malta’s Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they attempted to negotiate with Mr. Johnston. Despite multiple requests from the police to drop his weapon, Mr. Johnston refused to comply.

The situation escalated when Mr. Johnston, instead of surrendering, attempted to charge at the officers. In response, the police opened fire, fatally wounding him. Despite immediate medical assistance, Mr. Johnston was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The Maltese authorities have announced that autopsies will be conducted on both Mr. Johnston and Ms. Ghirxi to determine the official causes of death.
