Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has declared that the company can no longer operate solely as a traditional software company. Instead, it must completely reimagine its operations and rebuild its technological foundation for a new era driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
From the time Bill Gates founded Microsoft, the company was envisioned as an organisation that would never be limited to a single product or category. This vision has guided Microsoft for decades. But, according to Nadella, in today’s AI-powered world, that approach alone is no longer enough.
AI Systems as the Core of the Future
“Our future is not about building software for specific tasks,” Nadella said, “but about creating AI systems that help anyone build their own intelligent tools and solutions.”
The company is shifting from building applications to teaching everyone how to build their own. Nadella believes this will enable every person to work like a researcher or a data analyst, unlocking a new level of productivity and creativity.
Rebuilding the Technological Foundation
To achieve this, Microsoft plans to redesign its entire technology stack — from infrastructure and app platforms to the applications themselves — with AI-readiness at its core.
Through what Nadella calls the ‘Intelligence Engine’ approach, Microsoft aims to foster localised growth in every company, community, and country. This strategy will also democratise AI capabilities, making powerful tools — once available only to large corporations and technical experts — accessible to the general public and small businesses.
