Sligo Residents Urged to Renew Passports Early as Over 4,000 Issued in 2025

Holidaymakers in Sligo are being urged to check their passport expiry dates well in advance of travel, after new figures revealed that more than 4,000 passports have been issued in the county since the beginning of the year.

Ballygawley-based councillor Thomas Walsh has called on residents planning trips abroad in the coming months to ensure their documents are valid at least six months before departure. His warning comes as the Department of Foreign Affairs continues to advise travellers to avoid last-minute renewals to prevent disruption.

“The best time for citizens to check their passport’s expiry date is before booking their holiday,” Cllr Walsh said. “If you’ve already booked flights, check your passport now. Don’t leave it until the last minute.”

According to the Irish Passport Office, online applications remain the fastest and most cost-effective method for both renewals and first-time applications. At present, the online turnaround time is considerably quicker than the Post Passport (paper) option, which currently has a wait time of around eight weeks.

For those facing imminent travel, an Urgent Appointment Service is available at passport offices in Dublin and Cork, allowing for expedited processing under certain conditions.

Cllr Walsh stressed the importance of early action, noting that demand typically spikes in the summer months, leading to longer processing times.

Since January, 4,124 passports have been issued to residents of Sligo, reflecting both strong travel demand and the growing popularity of online renewals.

“When you’re booking your holidays, be prepared,” Walsh added. “Make sure your passport is in date well before you travel — it’s a simple step that can save a lot of stress.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs recommends travellers check entry requirements for their destination country, as some require a passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the date of arrival.
