JERUSALEM — A shooting attack at a bus stop at a busy intersection in north Jerusalem has left at least six people dead and more than a dozen wounded. The incident, which occurred during the morning rush hour on Monday, was carried out by two gunmen who were later shot and killed at the scene by a security officer and an armed civilian.
According to Israeli police and emergency services, the attackers opened fire on a bus and on passengers waiting at a bus stop at the Ramot Junction. Paramedics from Magen David Adom (MDA) described a scene of chaos with victims lying on the road and sidewalk, surrounded by shattered glass. Initial reports from emergency services stated five fatalities, but the death toll was later updated to six by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
The victims have been identified as a man and a woman in their 50s, and four men in their 30s. At least 15 people were injured in the attack, with several reported to be in serious condition.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the site of the attack and held a security assessment. Israeli authorities have described the perpetrators as Palestinians from the West Bank. While no specific militant group has officially claimed responsibility, the Palestinian group Hamas praised the attack, calling it a “natural response to the occupation’s crimes and war of extermination.” The Israeli military has since deployed forces to aid police in the search for any other suspects.
The shooting is one of the deadliest of its kind in Jerusalem in recent months and has heightened tensions in the region. The European Union has condemned the attack and called for de-escalation, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire.
