Kathua, Jammu & Kashmir – Just days after a devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar district killed around 65 people, tragedy has struck Jammu and Kashmir once again. A fresh cloudburst hit the remote Jod Ghati village of Rajbagh in Kathua district during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, leaving at least four dead and six injured, according to officials.

The back-to-back disasters have intensified concerns over extreme weather events in the Himalayan region, where fragile ecosystems are increasingly vulnerable to sudden downpours and flash floods.

Immediate Impact of the Kathua Cloudburst

Officials reported that the sudden cloudburst cut off access to Jod Ghati village, making rescue operations difficult. Torrential water flows damaged agricultural land, washed away property, and left residents trapped.

Rescue teams, including local authorities and disaster response forces, were swiftly deployed to the site. The injured were transported to nearby medical facilities where they are currently under observation. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether more people are missing in the aftermath.

Administration’s Response

The Kathua district administration has issued an advisory urging residents to remain indoors and keep away from rivers, streams, and other water bodies. Officials say close monitoring of the situation is underway, with disaster relief agencies on standby to assist vulnerable communities.

“People are advised to stay away from water bodies and remain vigilant. Our teams are on the ground, ensuring help reaches those in need as quickly as possible,” a district official stated.

Rising Incidents of Cloudbursts in Jammu & Kashmir

The Kishtwar disaster earlier this week highlighted the devastating impact of such extreme weather. Entire villages were submerged in floodwaters after the cloudburst triggered flash floods, leaving over 65 people dead, dozens injured, and many missing.

Experts have attributed the surge in such incidents to climate change, deforestation, and the fragile Himalayan terrain, which together create the perfect conditions for sudden and destructive floods. The growing frequency of cloudbursts has led to urgent calls for improved early-warning systems, disaster-resilient infrastructure, and sustainable development practices.

A Region on High Alert

Communities across Jammu and Kashmir remain anxious as extreme weather patterns persist. District administrations are reinforcing preparedness by pre-positioning relief supplies, deploying emergency teams, and strengthening communication channels in case of further natural calamities.

For now, rescue and recovery efforts in Kathua are ongoing, with priority given to restoring essential services and ensuring the safety of affected villagers.
