India celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Friday, 15 August 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering a wide-ranging address from the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi. The day began with the PM paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, followed by a ceremonial guard of honour and the hoisting of the national flag.

In a speech marked by strong national security themes, the Prime Minister unveiled two significant initiatives: the ‘High-Power Demography Mission’ to counter infiltration and demographic shifts in sensitive regions, and the ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’, a next-generation weapon system designed to strengthen India’s defence capabilities by 2035.

“Infiltrators are changing the demography of our nation, taking away the livelihoods of our youth, and targeting our sisters and daughters. This will not be tolerated,” PM Modi said.
“These infiltrators mislead tribals, seize their land, and threaten national security. No country can hand over its borderlands to infiltrators. Therefore, we are launching a High-Power Demography Mission.”

The PM emphasised that the mission would be aimed at protecting tribal land rights, addressing illegal migration, and maintaining the integrity of India’s border areas.

Shifting focus to defence, Modi announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra — a long-term strategic project inspired by the mythological weapon of Lord Krishna. The initiative will develop a “national security shield” to prevent enemy attacks, with the goal of full operational capability by 2035.

Security Tightened in Nagaland Amid Boycott Calls

Independence Day celebrations in Nagaland took place under high security, with the state police and Indian Reserve Battalions on alert. Two insurgent groups — NSCN/GPRN (Yung Aung faction) and ULFA-I — had called for a boycott of the event.

Complicating matters, the 5-Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP), representing the Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi tribes, announced it would not participate in protest against the state government’s handling of job reservation issues.

Student organisations in multiple districts also restricted participation by educational institutions, despite the state government mandating attendance for government staff. Authorities maintained confidence that celebrations would proceed peacefully.

Kerala Governor’s Message: A Call for Unity and Development

From the southern state of Kerala, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar extended greetings to the nation. He urged citizens to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters and commit to democratic values, inclusion, and self-reliance, envisioning a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Traffic and Weather Advisory for Delhi

The Delhi Traffic Police implemented extensive restrictions near the Red Fort from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., diverting interstate buses and restricting goods vehicle movement to ensure smooth ceremonial proceedings. Commuters were advised to rely on public transport and follow designated alternative routes.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a cloudy day with light showers in the capital, and temperatures ranging from 23°C to 33°C — a mild but potentially wet backdrop for attendees.

Yoga Institute Highlights Wellness Diplomacy

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) hosted dignitaries from the Ayush Ministry and the medicinal plants sector. The programme featured interactive sessions, a “Y-Break” activity designed for office-goers, and guided tours of the institute’s facilities. Organisers highlighted yoga’s role in promoting discipline, harmony, and service, reflecting its growing integration into India’s wellness and cultural diplomacy.

Development Push for Eastern India

Concluding his address, PM Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to balanced national growth, pledging significant infrastructure investments in eastern states.

“We aim to bring development in eastern India at par with the rest of the country… We have approved thousands of crores for infrastructure projects there,” he stated.

The 79th Independence Day celebrations combined solemn remembrance, calls for vigilance, and forward-looking initiatives, signalling a continued emphasis on national security and regional development as India moves toward its centenary of independence in 2047.
