Tensions in Gaza have once again escalated dramatically as the Israeli military issued a mass evacuation order for northern areas of the territory, signalling intensified operations against Hamas. The directive, announced on Sunday, 29th June, affects residents in areas such as Jabalia and Gaza City, who have been told to move south towards Al-Mawasi—a designated “humanitarian zone” near Khan Younis.
“Nowhere Is Safe” Say Aid Agencies
Despite the warning, humanitarian organisations and Palestinian officials maintain that no part of Gaza can be considered truly safe. Overnight airstrikes reportedly destroyed homes in Jabalia, killing several people, while further attacks in Khan Younis struck tent encampments near the supposed safe zone, resulting in additional casualties.
Trump Urges End to Conflict
The evacuation order coincides with renewed international efforts to broker a ceasefire. In a significant intervention, President Donald Trump has publicly called for an end to the conflict, urging both sides to “make the deal” and secure the release of hostages. He expressed hope that a ceasefire agreement could be reached within the coming week.
Hostage Fears Amidst Expanding Operations
Israeli officials have stated that their military campaign is close to achieving its objectives but warned that expanding operations could put remaining hostages at risk. Around 20 Israeli hostages are believed to still be alive in Gaza. Hamas has indicated it is willing to release them only as part of a broader agreement that includes a full Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war.
A War in its Twentieth Month
The conflict, now in its twentieth month, began in October 2023 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing over a thousand people and taking hundreds hostage. Israel’s response has been devastating, with tens of thousands of Palestinians reported killed and nearly the entire population of Gaza displaced. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate rapidly, with aid agencies reporting severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies. Many families are living in tents or makeshift shelters, and entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble.
Diplomatic Efforts Intensify
As diplomatic efforts intensify, the coming days may prove critical. Hamas has signalled a willingness to resume negotiations but remains firm on its demands. Israel, however, insists the war can only end if Hamas is fully dismantled—a condition the group refuses to accept. With civilians caught in the middle and global leaders pushing for a resolution, the world watches anxiously for signs of progress.
