A significant investment in rural Ireland was celebrated this week with the official opening of a new €1.7 million Library and Digital Hub in Dromahair, County Leitrim. Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary TD, inaugurated the facility on April 24, marking a transformative milestone for the local community.

Led by Leitrim County Council and financed through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, the project replaces the village’s former two-storey hotel with a purpose-built, modern facility. Spanning approximately 500 square metres, the new building is strategically located within Dromahair’s designated Architectural Conservation Area, ensuring the preservation of the village’s historic charm while introducing vital new services.

A Hub for Learning, Innovation, and Community Engagement

The Dromahair Library and Digital Hub offers an impressive range of amenities. Visitors can access a dedicated reference and study area, a computer suite, and multipurpose rooms for workshops, activities, exhibitions, and meetings. Additional facilities include listening and viewing areas, public toilets, staff offices, a communications room, and essential storage spaces.

Extensive site enhancements have also been completed as part of the project. New footpaths, internal roads, car and bicycle parking, street lighting, landscaped public spaces, and upgraded drainage and utilities have significantly improved accessibility and the overall visitor experience.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Calleary praised the achievement as “a major investment in rural life” and highlighted the visible enthusiasm of the local community. “Enormous credit is due to the officials of Leitrim County Council, local councillors, and TDs for their commitment. This funding is truly making a real difference in rural Ireland,” he stated.

Designed for the Future of Dromahair

More than a traditional book-lending service, the facility is envisioned as a dynamic centre for lifelong learning, digital access, and community participation. Flexible spaces support a diverse range of activities, fostering creativity, innovation, and social inclusion for all age groups.

The transformation of the former hotel site into a modern, accessible community asset is seen as a crucial step towards revitalising rural communities across Leitrim and beyond. It underscores national efforts to bridge the urban-rural divide and ensure equitable access to educational and digital resources.

Honouring a Lifetime of Service

During the celebrations, Leitrim County Council also took the opportunity to honour County Librarian Pauline Brennan, who is retiring after many years of distinguished service. The Council extended heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Ms Brennan, recognising her significant contribution to library services in the county.

Community Optimism for the Future

Local residents and community leaders have warmly welcomed the new facility, expressing optimism about the broader social and economic benefits it will bring. The enhanced library and digital hub is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting education, entrepreneurship, and social cohesion in Dromahair.

The opening of the Dromahair Library and Digital Hub exemplifies how strategic investment and community collaboration can breathe new life into rural towns, providing vital infrastructure for current and future generations.
