GREATER MANCHESTER, UK ā A consultant anaesthetist has confessed to engaging in a sexual act with a nurse while a patient was under anaesthesia during surgery. The incident came to light after another nurse witnessed the act.
Dr. Suhail Anjum, 44, a consultant anaesthetist in Greater Manchester, admitted to the misconduct, which occurred on September 16, 2013, at Tameside Hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne. According to evidence presented to a medical tribunal by Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council, Dr. Anjum left his post during the third of five surgeries he was overseeing to have sex with a nurse in a nearby operating theatre.
While the patient was not harmed, the doctor acknowledged that his actions constituted a grave professional failing.
During the tribunal’s proceedings in February 2024, Dr. Anjum returned to his home country of Pakistan. He has expressed a desire to come back to the UK and resume his medical practice. In a statement to the medical tribunal, he said he had let down everyone who trusted him, promised the incident would never happen again, and apologized for his actions.
