DONEGAL — Donegal Gardaí have issued a public safety warning to motorists as the annual roadside hedge-cutting season officially begins today, September 1st.
The Gardaí are urging all road users, particularly those on country roads, to be extra cautious and mindful of the increased presence of large agricultural machinery. According to a Garda spokesperson, there will be a “visible increase in this type of large machinery in operation along the roadsides over the coming weeks.”
Motorists are advised to drive with care and remain alert at all times.
The cutting of roadside hedges is prohibited from March 1st to August 31st to protect nesting birds and their habitats, as per the Wildlife Act. Landowners and occupiers are responsible for maintaining hedges on their property to ensure they do not pose a hazard to road users. The period from September 1st to the end of February is designated for this work.
