Dublin, Ireland: A social housing organization, Tuath Housing, has acknowledged and “regrets the inconvenience” caused to two of its tenants in south Dublin whose homes have been plagued by severe leaks, dampness, and mould for over a year, despite repeated complaints. The properties are managed and maintained by a separate management company.
One tenant, identified as Roisín (name changed for privacy), who lives with her two sons (aged 4 and 13), described the appalling living conditions which have persisted for almost two years. As a result of the ongoing leak, her home suffers from a hole in the ceiling, warped floorboards, and the shocking appearance of slugs and mushrooms growing on the roof and walls.
Roisín expressed her extreme distress to The Journal, stating, “I am very stressed, nearly in tears to be honest… I have mushrooms growing out of the walls, slugs, and my kids inhaling that.”
The lack of repair has also created dangerous conditions. Roisín reported that she and her 4-year-old son have both slipped and fallen due to the water damage. A potential electrical hazard from the water leak was also noted. Despite constant engagement and repeated complaints to Tuath Housing, Roisín claims that nothing substantial has been done to permanently fix the issue.
Tuath Housing is an Approved Housing Body providing accommodation to nearly 40,000 tenants nationwide. The charity has indicated it regrets the long-standing issue affecting the health and safety of the tenants.
