DUBLIN — An Garda Síochána has deployed over 1,700 checkpoints across Ireland as part of its annual Christmas Road Safety Campaign. The operation, which runs until January 5, 2026, aims to curb a worrying rise in road fatalities, which have reached their highest level in over a decade this year.
Key Points of the Campaign:
- Focus on “Killer Behaviours”: Gardaí are specifically targeting speeding, mobile phone use, and driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
- Current Statistics: As of December 29, 2025, 189 people have tragically lost their lives on Irish roads this year—an increase compared to 2024.
- Enforcement Action: In the final weeks of December alone, hundreds of arrests have been made for intoxicated driving, and over 5,000 drivers were detected speeding during recent “Slow Down” operations.
- Safety Message: Authorities are urging socialisers to plan their journeys home in advance and reminding drivers that alcohol can remain in the system the following morning.
