Dublin – Revenue Customs officers, working in tandem with An Garda Síochána, have carried out significant seizures of illegal cigarettes across the country over the past week, targeting both distribution networks and smuggling at ports of entry. The operations resulted in the confiscation of tobacco products valued at over €235,940 by Revenue alone, supplemented by a massive recovery operation in Offaly by Gardaí.
Revenue officers executed major operations this week, stemming a significant flow of illicit tobacco into the Irish market.
Cork City Seizure: In an operation targeting the illegal sale and distribution of tobacco, Revenue officers, acting under warrant, searched a residence in Blackpool, Cork city, on Thursday. The search resulted in the seizure of cigarettes valued at approximately €55,500. Seized brands included John Player Blue, Mayfair, and Marlboro Gold. A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s were questioned in connection with the discovery.
Dublin Airport Seizure: The largest Revenue seizure occurred on Tuesday at Dublin Airport. Officers intercepted Platinum 7 brand cigarettes being brought in by passengers arriving on a flight from Cairo, Egypt. The total value of this haul was approximately €180,440. Five passengers—males and females, aged from their late teens to their 40s—were arrested and are scheduled to appear in court.
Gardaí Recover Massive €858k Haul in County Offaly
In a separate, substantial operation, An Garda Síochána conducted searches on two properties in County Offaly, specifically in Edenderry and Rhode. These searches uncovered an enormous quantity of illegal cigarettes valued at around €858,500. Investigations into this large-scale recovery are ongoing.
