SLIGO – Traffic is heavily disrupted in Sligo town centre this morning following a major oil spill that has necessitated the closure of O’Connell Street.

Sligo County Council crews are currently dealing with the extensive spill, which stretches from Grattan Street into the town’s main thoroughfare.

The Council has confirmed that O’Connell Street has been completely closed to allow workers to manage and clear the hazardous material. The closure has immediately led to significant traffic tailbacks across key surrounding routes, including:

  • Bridge Street
  • Grattan Street
  • John Street

The Council has not provided an exact time for the re-opening of O’Connell Street, but crews are expected to be working on site for at least the next couple of hours. Commuters are advised to avoid the town centre and seek alternative routes where possible.
