SHILLELAGH, Co. Wicklow – A man in his 60s has tragically died following a serious two-car collision that occurred on the R725 in Co. Wicklow yesterday evening. The fatal incident, which took place in the Rath East area of Shillelagh, resulted in serious injuries to a second driver and minor injuries to a passenger.
An Garda Síochána and emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 6:50 PM on Friday, October 24, after reports of a collision involving two vehicles on the R725.
The driver of the first vehicle, a man in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed to the Naas Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to be carried out in due course.
Two Others Hospitalised
Two other individuals involved in the crash were immediately attended to by paramedics.
A female passenger travelling in the same car as the deceased was conveyed to St Luke’s General Hospital, Carlow-Kilkenny, for treatment of her injuries. Her condition is currently believed to be non-life-threatening.
The male driver of the second car sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. He was initially transported to St Luke’s General Hospital before being subsequently transferred to University Hospital Waterford for specialised medical care.
Garda Appeal for Witnesses and Dash-Cam Footage
Gardaí have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal collision and are appealing to the public for assistance.
Investigating officers are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have relevant information to come forward. Specifically, they are requesting that any road users who were travelling on the R725 near Rath East between 6:00 PM and 6:50 PM on Friday, October 24, and who may possess camera footage (including dash-cam recordings) to make this footage available to the Gardaí.
The road was closed for a period following the collision to allow for a forensic examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
