IRELAND – Revenue & Customs officials and leading neurologists have issued a stark warning regarding the “widespread” and dangerous rise of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) abuse across Ireland. According to Revenue’s criminal investigation lead, Thomas Talbot, organised crime gangs are now importing the gas at scale, with over 1,000 large canisters being seized per week, primarily at Dublin and Rosslare ports.
While small 16g cartridges were once common, officials are now seeing truckloads of 600g+ industrial-sized canisters. Mr. Talbot noted that these larger units have “no legitimate use” in the catering industry and are purely for illicit profit. The cost of destroying these pressurized canisters has already reached €1.6 million.
Severe Neurological Risks
Health officials are equally concerned. Dr. Hugh Kearney, a consultant neurologist at St. James’s Hospital, reported a “spike” in emergency department visits linked to the gas. He treats two to three cases of neurotoxicity weekly, with symptoms ranging from tingling in the fingers to full paralysis.
“Nitrous oxide blocks Vitamin B12, which is essential for protecting nerves. Without it, the spinal cord can be irreparably damaged, leaving users unable to walk or feel their limbs,” Dr. Kearney explained.
Impact on Youth
Youth workers report that “hippy crack” is now deeply embedded in teenage culture (ages 14–17) as a cheaper alternative to alcohol. Ciara Murphy of Finglas Youth Services highlighted the trend, noting cases where children have used “confirmation money” to purchase the gas via social media marketplaces like Instagram and WhatsApp.
