LIMERICK — The city has received a major economic boost with the announcement that Spanish chip design firm Openchip is opening a new design centre in Limerick, creating 70 highly-skilled research and development (R&D) jobs.

Openchip, based in Barcelona, will establish its new Irish centre at the landmark Gardens International premises on Henry Street. The technology firm designs high-tech devices to accelerate computers and systems, with products expected to power Europe’s next generation of AI and supercomputing systems.

Key Details:

  • Total Jobs: 70 R&D positions planned within the year.
  • Current Status: 40 positions have already been filled.
  • Location: Gardens International, Limerick City Centre.
  • Support: The project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Openchip’s work has been recognised by the European Commission as an “Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI),” highlighting its vital role in keeping the continent competitive and innovative in advanced computing.

Minister for Enterprise, Peter Burke, welcomed the news, calling it a “strong endorsement of Ireland’s global reputation as a hub for research and development in semiconductor and advanced technologies.”

Openchip CEO Cesc Guim emphasized the move as key to achieving “European digital sovereignty,” stating the expansion into strategic locations like Ireland is essential for building a robust, homegrown semiconductor and AI ecosystem. The company plans to recruit roles from graduates to senior experts, leveraging the strong talent ecosystem and collaboration with local universities in Ireland’s Midwest region.
