The incident occurred shortly after 2am on Sunday, 10 August 2025, on the R582 at Gurteenroe, Macroom. Emergency services arrived to find a male pedestrian, aged in his 30s, with severe injuries. He was treated at the scene before being rushed to Cork University Hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

The occupants of the car involved did not require immediate medical treatment.

GardaĆ closed the R582 for a number of hours to allow for a full technical examination of the crash site. The road has since reopened to traffic.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson confirmed the details and urged witnesses to come forward:

ā€œShortly after 2am, GardaĆ and emergency services were alerted to an incident involving a car and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition at Cork University Hospital. The occupants of the car did not require medical attention. The scene was preserved for examination and the road has since reopened.ā€

Witness Appeal
Officers are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the Millstreet Road in the Macroom area between 1am and 2.15am to contact them. They are particularly keen to speak with motorists who may have dash-cam footage or other camera recordings from that time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Macroom Garda Station at (026) 20590, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The collision comes amid ongoing concerns about road safety in County Cork (link) following a spate of serious incidents in recent months.
