A woman in her 60s has tragically died following a collision involving a lorry on Rathbawn Road in Castlebar, County Mayo. The incident occurred at approximately 9:55am on Thursday morning, prompting an immediate emergency response from local authorities.

Gardaí confirmed that the woman, who was a pedestrian at the time of the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the lorry involved in the collision was transported to hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Details regarding the extent of their injuries have not yet been disclosed.

Following the fatal incident, Rathbawn Road was temporarily closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a thorough examination of the scene. The road has since reopened to traffic.

Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance as part of their ongoing investigation. In particular, Gardaí are seeking witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the collision or who may have relevant information.

Appeal for Dash-Cam and Camera Footage

Investigators are specifically calling on any road users who were travelling through Rathbawn Road between 9:30am and 10:00am on Thursday and who may have dash-cam or other camera footage to come forward. This footage may prove crucial in understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic collision.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 9038200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station across the country.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly released as efforts are ongoing to notify next of kin. Gardaí have confirmed that their investigation is active and ongoing.

This latest incident adds to the growing concerns over pedestrian safety and road traffic collisions in rural and urban areas across Ireland. The Government has recently ramped up road safety awareness campaigns, urging both drivers and pedestrians to take extra caution.

As authorities continue their inquiry into Thursday’s incident, they are reminding all road users to remain vigilant and to report any information that may aid in the investigation.
